In chapter 3, Mark records that great crowds are flocking to see and listen to Jesus. In verse 9 Jesus accommodates these crowds, but they become so large and intrusive that He and His disciples cannot even find a time and place to eat (verse 20). In verse 21, His “friends” are concerned about His sanity and try (unsuccessfully) to intervene. In verse 22 Mark writes of a greater threat. Members of the religious elite from Jerusalem arrive and accuse Him of being an agent of satan himself, even going so far as to claim that He is possessed by an unclean spirit (3:22 and 30). Why do they think it necessary to bring this accusation? Jesus responds to this accusation in two ways. First, He presents a logical argument that reveals the ridiculous nature of their claim 3:23-27). Second, He goes even further and tells His accusers that they are committing a sin that can never be forgiven (3: 28-30) what is this sin? Why is blaspheming the Holy Spirit such a serious matter? (The same–or similar– events are also described in Matthew 12:22-31 and Luke 11:14-23 and 12:10).
The focus of our activities is the Word of God. It has the power to transform our thinking so that we can conform to His image and not the world’s. We seek to support each other, challenge each other to love and good works so that we might live consistent lives that truly glorify God. Individually and collectively we desire to be led by the Spirit, embrace His wisdom and live as children obedient to our Father. Our ministry has two major objectives—to care for those whom God leads to our church and to proclaim the Gospel. While we adhere to a clearly defined set of beliefs we know that the Church is an inclusive body where all are welcome without regard to the divisions that are so prevalent in our society.
You’re invited to join us as we worship God by seeking to allow His Word to direct our thoughts and lives.
